Smile IF Function - Refer the cell which is Blank by value but formula is there

    Dear Friends & Gurus,

This seems to be a simple one. But I couldn't find the solution.

    In Cell A2:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
If the A1 cell is blank then it returns with blank. Otherwise it returns with the value.

Now again, if I refer the A2 cell in another cell (A3) like this:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
    it returns FALSE.

Can any one please tell me how to find if a null value is appeared in the cell in which a formula is entered.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

I tested this for XL2000 and XL2007 and in both cases it works as it should. It always shows the same value in A2 and A3 as in A1. I don't get a FALSE in A3 in any case.

Anyway, you could try this in A3

    Smile Dear Mr. Jazzer,

Yes, I too agree with you.

The formula with LEN is working. But the IF formula is returns FALSE only.

For academic interest, I have attached a sample file for your ref.

Please see the same and guide me.

    Thanks.

ok, now I understand what you mean. In Excel's help it says:

ISBLANK Value refers to an empty cell.

So if there is a formula in a cell, it is not empty. And that's why your first example seemed to work, but it didn't work in a way it was meant to.

By the way, you also could use this formula in A3:

    =IF(A2="","",A2)
