    Red face Adding times in a filtered list

    Any help would be appreciated!

    I have a list in excel, from my phone bill, I want to add up all the call times to give me a total in hours:mins:secs. In the call time’s column, there is also other non time related data. Using the type column, I can filter the list to just display the call times. I have formatted these cells to hh:mm:ss, as the data is formatted like this - 00:44:31.

    I now want to add up this filtered list to display a total formatted in hh:mm:ss and have formatted the cell accordingly. However =SUM(E2:E84) gives me a result of 00:00:00! If I use =E4+E29+E42, etc I get the right result, but entering this is too laborious for such a long list.

    Thanks in advance.

    Have a look at the SUBTOTAL() function...

    e.g. =Subtotal(9,A1:A100) will sum A1:A100 in a filtered list.
    Where there is a will there are many ways.

    Hi thanks for the suggestion. I have tried =SUBTOTAL(9,E3:E243) and I still get a result of 00:00:00. Any other ideas?

    Are you sure those times are entered as numbers and not text strings?

    Try this.

    Select the column containing the times and go to Data|Text to Columns... Click Finish.

    Does that fix it?

    That's great. Yeah that has worked a treat, but I don't understand why! The text wizard said the data was delimited. What does 'Text to columns' do?

    Thanks for your help NBVC!

    What does 'Text to columns' do
    Well, actually, if you skip to the 3rd dialogue in the Text To Columns tool, you will see that General is selected in the Column Data Format area.... since it is the default selection, clicking Finish on first screen uses this setting.

    This converts the selected range to general (numbers) if they are in text format.

    Usually, downloading a file with date/time entries end up being text strings in Excel... until you convert them.
