VLOOKUP - How to make cell format follow?

I have a table with various custom cell formats in it ($/sq.ft., #/ft., $/#, ea., etc...) and i want to make the cell format follow the numeric cell value when using the "vlookup" function. Presently, only the value in the cell is transfered during the function.

Is there a syntax setting, a function within the Vlookup function, a conditional formatting trick, or do I need to use another function?

    As always, Thanks.

There is no way of controlling this via formulae I'm afraid.
