    Vlookup not selecting source data

I am having trouble with a number of workbooks when using vlookup (using the wizard rather than entering the formula directly)
First I select the cell with lookup value, then try to select the table array on the source sheet but the cursor changes to the hand symbol and I can't click on any cells. I have had this problem with many different workbooks. The only solution I have found is to copy the whole sheet, paste-special-values into a new sheet and use that as source.

I have attached a sample sheet here which produces the error
    Attached Files Attached Files

    Hi,

That workbook & sheet doesn't help a lot, there's no data in it. Why don't you upload the workbook you're trying to work with and explain what you're trying to do by referring to specific cells.

Richard, Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I took the data out of that sheet deliberately as it was private however the error still happens.
If you open that workbook and use it as the data source, open a second workbook, select any cell then paste function-vlookup, in the lookup value box select say A1 then click the table_array box and try to select any range of cells in column A on the data sheet and you won't be able to.

I hope that explains it more clearly

    Hi,

I can't see what the problem is. As expected the Vlookup works perfectly normally.
enter say '1' in A1 of a second workbook and in B1 enter:

Please Login or Register to view this content.
and it will return the value 'Lookup test' from your test workbook.

    Richard,

your right it does work ok when entering the formula manually as you have done. But try doing the same lookup using the paste function (fx) wizard and then it won't work

    Hi,

Using the wizard, by which I presume you mean allowing Excel to prompt you for the various elements of the VLOOKUP() function, works OK for me. Are you sure you are selecting the appropriate cell / range / column / true/false in the boxes that are presented?

When you say it doesn't work what exactly do you mean?

Re: Vlookup not selecting source data

umm very starnge that it works for you Richard.

Let me expain exactly what happens:
    Step 1
I put a value in a new workbook (cell a1)
select cell c1 then select pate function -> Vlookup
The lookup box opens and in the top box (lookup value) I click cell a1

then click trhe second box (table_array)
Then select my source data sheet (lookup test) and try to select the range a1 - c10

this is the point at which it won't allow me to select any cells. The cursor has changed form what should be a cross to the hand symbol and if I try to click on any cells it just doesn't select them.

I can't understand why it works for you as it doesn't work for me any time with this workbook.

    G'day everyone,

It works for me, but I had the macro disabled. I wonder if you disabled the macro in your workbook it might work for you.

    Just a though

Re: Vlookup not selecting source data

    Hi,

Can you select those cells at all - irrespective of when creating a formula?

Is it just a VLOOKUP or do you get the same problem when you start on another sheet and just enter "=" then click on the second sheet tab and any cell?

Re: Vlookup not selecting source data

    Richard,

I have tried your suggestion and it will not select any cells on this sheet when entering = then trying to select from this sheet so apparently the problem is not specifically relating to Vlookup

    Hi,

Are you sure you aren't trying to select a cell which has a hyperlink attached to it? This would cause the cursor to change to a hand symbol.

    Regards

hmm I think you are on to something here. I'm not trying to select a cell which has a hyperlink attached (the cursor is showing a hand symbol over the whole sheet) however I can now see that this does happen when using a sheet that has some hyperlinks in it. (though not actually trying to selct those cells)
