string function to get selective text from long string

I haven't used the string function since old days of Lotus but seem to remember that I can find a special character ($), move right until reaching a blank space, then copy those characters between special and blank and copy to a cell. Then continue to find same special character again, same process and copy to cell in row below. Specifically here I am trying to get the dollar amounts from this string, put them in rows to add up.
    3/24/2011Card Purchase MAIN STREET MARKET GAITHERSBURG MD * $9.53 * 3/24/2011Card Purchase ACE HARDWARE INC #320QPS GAITHERSBURG MD * $14.56 * 3/23/2011Card Purchase ACME SERVICE STATION GAITHERSBURG MD * $7.86 * 3/23/2011Card Purchase RESTAURANT GAITHERSBURG MD * $15.89 * 3/23/2011Card Purchase MID-TOWN MARKET GAITHERSBURG MD

    Thanks,

Is this an online statement from your bank?

I ask, because my bank has an option in a dropdown menu for downloads and you can choose Excel (PC) and enter the date range to download. This would save you a bunch of work.

It is but for the current activity before next statement there is no pc download. Also, I would like to know how to do this to manipulate other data in our office. Thanks
