I'm performing a plant count at a local University. The campus is being divided into a grid and then the plants in each cell will be inventoried.
The spreadsheet will sort by species name with another column listing the total number of each species occurring in each cell. Confused yet?
I would like to know if it's plausible to construct a formula that tallies the sums associated with each occurrence of species x where x is unknown?

I have no idea what your data will actually look like.
However, it sounds like a Pivot Table would do what you want.
Or, if you have a master list of species, you could probably make your own matrix using SUMIFS.
Or, if you don't have a master list, you could extract one with an Advanced Filter.
Lots of options. Depends a lot on your data and how you want to approach it.
