Match 2 Lists Depending on a the first Characters of the cell-which will be variable

    Hello Excel Forum

Just cannot get my formula to work 100% as I desire it to.

I have a list of countries (sheet1) and want to tag in the next column if any of them are in another list called Sanctioned Countries.

I want to see 3 responses:
    - Exact Match
    - Possible Match (based on the match of the numbers of characters I select)
    - No Match (based on the match of the numbers of characters I select)

My formula picks up the Exact matches - no problem - but it is not working for the other 2 responses. I have tried removing the "istext()" part of the formula because I don't think the formula actually needs this.

Been having a go all evening without hitting the bullseye!

Hope it also provides an interesting problem for other forum users to learn from as well.
    Many thanks
    Denise

Thank you so very much ConneXionLost.
    It works perfectly.
Appreciate your time to help me.

Hope others can use this for "fuzzy searches".

What I can do now is apply the Data Filter and see what matches I am getting - depending on how many characters you take. Obviously the less characters the more possible matches - 3 or 4 Character search is about right to eyeball the list.

    Many thanks once again.
    Regards
    denise
