Hi I need to figure out how to find the first date

I know you have the answer, thanks.

I have a spread sheet with dates in one column that correspond to a value in another. Sometimes the dates are not there, for nothing was entered, or there are multiple dates of the same.

I need to find the first date in the column and retrieve the other columns value or if it is not their go to the next available date and retrieve the value in the other column. Basically i am entering a beginning date and an ending date to retrieve info from those 2 dates. I can get the ending dates value just fine, VLOOKUP(U1,A:B,2,1) works great. It’s the beginning that has me stumped!

Here is a sample:

01/05/11 5
01/05/11 67
02/01/11 12
02/02/11 4

If I enter 01/07/11 it should give me 12
if I enter 01/05/11 it should give me 5

What is the date format.. is it dd/mm/yy or mm/dd/yy?

Assuming you have the data in column A & B and the testing date (01/07/2011 or 01/05/2011) in cell D2, use following formula to get the desired results-
