Using nested functions to calculate totals based on labels in adjacent cells

    Hello!

New to the forum, and relatively new to the concept of nested functions and such. I was hoping to figure out if what I want to do is A) Possible using nested functions (or something else) and B) How to go about getting it put together.

This is for a simple spreadsheet that is designed to input and calculate subtotals for monetary amounts, nothing more complicated than adding and subtracting

Here's how it is set up. I have 40 columns. 20 of these columns are devoted to inputing monetary amounts. The columns to the right of the monetary columns are used for labeling different types of funds in the monetary cells. For labels I'm using N (normal) M (Miscellaneous), OB (out of balance), and so on. Here's how it would look:

    OB 2359.02 N 35.29 M 6900.00
    M 8569.00 OB 4500 N 7000.00

And so on. As you can see, there will be different labels attached to different money amounts from column to column. The Labels will be input in the relevent cells at the same time the monetary amounts are put in the following cell.

What I want to do is create a separate cell elsewhere in the spreadsheet where amounts that have specific labels (such, as OB) will be subtotaled as their own separate subtotals, and not as part of the same subtotals as regular monetary amounts (such as the Normal or Misc. types)

How would I go about doing this?

    Thanks!

I would suggest using =SUMIF(), but the setup up of your data is making creating the formula a bit tedious; perhaps you should consider using just 2 columns. One with labels and one with amounts...
