I am trying to sum amounts for various accounts by department and the lookup values are in a single cell. Please see the attached spreadsheet. Example 1 has the solution that I am looking for and I found it on this forum. However, I am trying to lookup account numbers (See Example 2) that are stored as text and the solution in my example 1 does not work with the account numbers.
Assuming the codes are always 5 digits each...try, in B18:
copied across.

Looking at it again, I am not sure why you need the INDEX() function at the end, since you are referencing cell in same column anyway.
You can simply use:
