Getting a formula to update output in dynamic fashion

I am a user of Excel at a not basic but not very advanced level.

I am wanting to apply the formulas "SUM" and "COUNT" to a range of (a few hundred) lines of financial data. The data within the range are updated daily. In the past when I have set up this kind of worksheet, with the same two formulas, the outputs (Sum and Count) were updated by Excel in dynamic fashion, as content on each line was updated. Now, in order to get the updated output, I have to place the cursor IN the formula cell, in/on the text of the formula and then hit enter. Then the output is updated to the correct Count or Sum.

I am not sure what I might have inadvertently done differently to set up this kind of restriction on the worksheet.

    Thank you for any help.

Do a quick check on the calculation mode settings ..
Click Tools > Options > Calculation tab > Check "Automatic" > OK

    Thank you, Max.

That took care of it. Did not know about that tab - although I have used formulas for years. I must have inadvertently changed a setting and not known how to reset it.

    Appreciate your looking at it.

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Calculation tab.

    Under Calculation, select Automatic.

    Click Okay.

Great to hear that resolved it for you! Just a point to note about Excel's calc mode setting. Excel's calc mode is set by the very first book that you open (for that Excel session). So if the first book that you open was (previously) saved in manual mode, then the setting in that session will be manual. Every subsequent book that you may open would hence be in manual mode, irrespective of its previously saved calc mode.

Btw, do take a moment to celebrate your success, click the little star at the bottom left of my responses

    Thanks again. Very useful information.

What an odd setup by Excel!
