Hi all,
I have a column of results which are either 'Win' or 'Lose' and need to find out the average number of times that 'Lose' occurs but I only know how to obtain a mean on number strings.

There are several solutions possible, but
You get better help if you post an Excel-file (example of your workbook), without confidential information.
Make sure the workbook demonstrates your desired results if possible, or just highlight the cells you're trying to fix.
Use BEFORE/AFTER sheets if that helps make it clearer.
Notice my main language is not English.
I appreciate it, if you reply on my solution.

Hopefully you can see from the attached spreadsheet what I am trying to do.....thanks for responding....

Hi Oeldere, not quite. I want to know the average number of Losers before a winner; so if say from 11 races there is 1 winner followed by 4 losers, then a winner, then 6 losers, then a winner, the average number of losers is 5.........does that make sense.
Thanks again......
Not realy. How you come on an average of 5.
1 winner
10 losers
11 total
The average losers of total is 10/11.
This answer not equals to 5.
OP means WLLLLWLLLLLLW 2 sequences of L one of 4 one of 6 so the average is(6+4)/2 =5 not sure how to calculate that
well this does it for whatever use it is lol

Hi Oeldere, sorry, it's obviously my inability to put the problem across in a logical way, never the less, martindwilson has explained it very much better than I; and yes that is what I am after thanks. I take my hat off to you people for your knowledge of Excel formulae as I have always struggled like hell trying to get to grips with the syntax. I think I understand your instruction Martin, I shall soon know when I enter some more data and if the results are as promising as they appear to be (a little more to it than meets the eye) then, if you guys are interested, I shall tell you what it amounts to.
I think the average streak of wins and losses is ...

Thanks all for your responses, I think Martin came up with the easiest way for me to sort the problem though.
Kind regards........
