    How to ignore a blank cell

    Hi. I'm using the following formula: =COUNTA($A$27:$A$33)

    What I am trying to do is tell excel not to count the cells that are blank. I need those cells to be ignored because counting them is throwing off my numbers.

    Please help!

    If those cells contain a formula which returns a blank, then COUNTA will include them. Try this instead:

    =COUNTIF($A$27:$A$33,"?*")

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Marcol. I tried the formula you gave me and it made the word "TRUE" go in the box that I was attempting to use the formula in. I'm not sure of what that means.

    Hi Pete. I tried the formula you gave me above and it made the word TRUE go in the cell. It did the same thing for the formula one of the other contributors gave me. I'm not sure of what that means though

    Am I going doo-wally ...
    Can't get COUNTIF() to ignore blanks, I've tried ">""", "<>""" and "<""" as criteria, neither seems to work ...

    This seems to work ...

    @Marcol

    to count non-blanks, use this:

    =COUNTIF(A1:A10,"<>")

    but this also counts formula-blanks (in XL2010, which I have access to at the moment - I didn't think it did in XL2003).

    @ Pete

    Aye that is always a problem, but these should work if there is a formula returning "", but they don't ...

    Of course we could always fall back on good old SUMPRODUCT()
    Formula: copy to clipboard
