In need of a Lookup formula

I have created a mock version of the problem I'm having. In cell E2 I am trying to make a formula that will lookup the date and item, which will change, and return the value from the rows highlighted in yellow. For example if the date 1/2/2012 were entered in cell B1 and the item entered in cell B2 were 456, then the value returned in cell E2 would be 6. I've tried various combinations of formulas but I cannot seem to lookup the cell below where the column (date) and row (item) intersect. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    in E2
    =INDEX(D6:G11,MATCH(B2,C6:C11,0)+1,MATCH(B1,D4:G4,0))

Ensure you describe your problem clearly, I have little time available to solve these problems and do not appreciate numerous changes to them.
