    Combine both IF and LOOKUP

Hi, new user here. I just started researching how to use the IF and LOOKUP function this morning, so if this is a basic lesson...my apologies :P

I've been searching back and forth between forums for a specific answer to my specific problem. I feel that I am close to my answer, but still come up with a solution. Here's my problem:

I would like to do a LOOKUP search based off of two different selections off of a drop down list. I have the LOOKUP formula done right, and I've tried something along the lines of =IF(F26="STC",[LOOKUP(...STC value)],[LOOKUP(...NOCT value)]). Obviously this doesn't work, but am I right for trying?

If a little bit of a background story helps, I have two different table values that I need to LOOKUP. This LOOKUP is based off of one of two test condition values found in a drop down box (STC or NOCT). I have a feeling that an IF formula may be the wrong way of going about this.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

If you have two different tables and you want to lookup a value from either table depending on the drop down value, then first make sure the value you're looking up is in the first column of the table. Then use a formula like

where col_number is the number of the column in the tables that carries the value you want to find.

If this is not what you mean then upload an example workbook with references to what results you expect.

Re: Combine both IF and LOOKUP

    Richard,

It took me a while to figure out how to figure this one out, but I re-organized my table and everything came up the way it should. Thank you so much!

I have another question, but this time it involves how to ask questions on the forum. If someone solves my query, but I have an additional request based on the recent solution, must I open up a new thread regarding that new question, or can I simply continue on the original thread?

Again, thanks for the quick reply.
