    adding flagged cells

I'm trying to develope a spreadsheet that has a column that contains a list of truck numbers and a corresponding column next to that has vehicle GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Next to the column of Truck numbers is a column to insert an X to select the corresponding truck next to it. Then I have another set of columns with trailer numbers, their GVWR and also a column next to the trailer numbers for selecting the trailer. The purpose of this spreadsheet is to be able to select a truck and trailer, have their GVWR added together and by simple formula, indicate whether the driver is required to have a CDL or not. Do I need to created named ranges or how do I reference the cell next to the cell I have checked? Thanks for any help.

The problem I have is that you have a column of 34 trucks and trailers. So, when you have multiple trucks and trailers in service, there is no way to match any particular tractor with a specific trailer because you will have multiple x's in each column. Unless, you always only send them out one at a time. An alternative is to use data validation to select a tractor/trailer combo and then vlookup to get the corresponding wts.:

That's just what I was looking for. I think I was making it too complicated. I had a feeling that I needed to use a lookup table. Thanks so much for your help!
