Smile need help to count with condition on two consecutive cells

    Hello,

I am basically a newbie using formulas in excel, so apologies if my question might be trivial !!

For grading my students, I have three possible grades, "R", "R-" and "NR". When there are two consecutive "R-", the second should be counted as a "NR".
I'd like to count the total of "R" plus "R-", taking into account the previous condition for two consecutive "R-".

    Example:

    R R NR R- R- R- R- NR R

the total should be 5 (the fifth and seventh values, "R-" would be counted as a "NR" because they are preceded by another "R-").

I am not sure if I managed to explain myself...

Is there a way to achieve this above ?

    Thanks in advance !!!

See my attached sheet to see if it is something that might work. I used the formula:

    Hi Moo,,

impressive, what you sent me definitely works !! Thanks a lot !!

I was wondering if it's even possible to concentrate all formulas entered in the second row into a single-formula, so that top have "5" as a final result directly in a cell taking into account all values within the range B1 to J1 ??

The issue is that I have many grades entered into consecutive rows, and it would be great if I could have a single result for each row ??

    Thanks in all cases !

I've been working a bit on it and haven't come up with anything yet, but if I do - you'll be the first to know.

You could use the helper row and just hide those when finished. Just an option.
