    Update External Links w-i-t-h-o-u-t VB

I have a 'summary' document that links to multiple other documents on multiple servers. Some of the documents are automatically generated reports which include the date as part of the file names. The formulas work, and all the data is correct.

I want to be able to update/refresh the links without opening the documents (which btw, are large in some cases). Because of the dates in the file names, I had to use an INDIRECT to appropriately select the source files.

    (ex. N:\path\morepath\morepath\my12-12-2012file.xls)

-- My IT department has already rejected INDIRECT.EXT as an unacceptable security risk. I'm not able to fully trace it to its origins, but any add-ins not generated by Microsoft will probably get rejected.
-- I attempted replacing drive letters with actual server names, and it converted my data to error messages.

I don't know anything about VB.

How can I get my files to update?

    Thank you,
    Jason In Everett

No, I don't want to open the documents. They're large and they usurp resources when opening across the network. A macro still requires opening them to run the update. I have a workaround, so I suppose this is solved, but the macro solution is not the answer.

The 2nd link is using VBA. I DON'T KNOW VBA. The whole point was to find an answer w-i-t-h-o-u-t VBA. If I knew VBA, I wouldn't be in this forum in the first place. I could just code solutions to all my problems. Thanks anyway.
