Simple MID function not working

400372-4101955-S09 <------this is my cell where I want to extract info. I want to take out 4101955
This is my function which I think is right?!?! =mid(E38,3,4)
But it doesnt work, im just left with =mid(E38,3,4) in my cell

Has to be something I am doing wrong?!?!Suggestions please?

Format the destination cell as general. Select the cell press F2 then press Enter

Try this:

=MID(E38,FIND("-",E38)+1,7)

Maybe that cell is formatted as Text - if so, change the format to General.

However, your formula will take 4 characters out of E38, starting with the 3rd character, so I think you probably want:

=mid(E38,8,7)
