COUNTIF not counting

Hi there,

I have a list of several hundred geographical grid references and need to work out how many times each one appears. I've used a pivot table to create a list of unique values and then tried to count the appearance of each one in the original table using the COUNTIF function.

However, the COUNTIF fuction is bringing up many 0 values. I have checked to make sure there aren't spaces at the end of the original data and this doesn't seem to be the case (and I assume this shouldn't be a problem anyway because I used the pivot table).

Does anyone have any ideas about what I might be doing wrong?

Welcome to the forum.
Hope you are using the countif syntax correctly starting with range and followed by criteria.
