Date input as relative referencing to create average between two dates

Hi Everyone,
I have a little problem that I would like to seek insights to.
Perhaps anyone has a little more insight in Excel than I do.
I have attached a picture that shows a bit of the problem
Forum Question.GIF

I would like to give start dates and end dates existing in a column of consecutive dates as inputs and then use the rows they are in as row- references to create an average between these dates from values in another column.
Say my dates are in Coumn A starting at row 2 and the values for the respective rows are in B.

In two other cells call them, D2 and D4, I take as input the startdate and the enddate.
Now I would like the average in D6.

So the question is what do I write in D6

I hope I gave some clarity to the problem.

Thank you in advance

you are using 2010 according to your profile, that means you have access to the averageifS() function. play around wuth that and see how far you get. Use the formula editor to help you with the syntax
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Hi FDibbins and thank you for your answer.

The averageif(s) function seems pretty straghtforward and I have used it before.
The problem for me is to syntax the dynamic referencing(s) I get as input(s).
