Extract Year or Month only from a cell with date and time

How do I extract the year or month only from a cell with the date in the format of: mmm d, yyyy h:mm:ss AM/PM. Fumbled around with a few things and haven't come up with the answer yet.

If it's a 'real' date/time you can use the YEAR and MONTH functions.

MONTH will return the month number, but if you wanted the month name you can use TEXT.
