Need to calculate if date older than a period determined

I am a novice and needing a formula to calculate if a date is older than a period determined in another cell.

    For Example:
Inspection took place on 1/9/2012 (1-Sept-2012) and inspections must take place every quarter. As at today, is that date more than a 3 months ago? If so, return a warning symbol like an !

    Thanks

Thank you. As an extra, can I set the "90" to a cell reference because some are monthly, some are annually etc.. rather than changing the formula for each row

can I.. "if "annual" > 365, if "monthly" > 30 days" etc somehow?

Sure, just set a cell reference to whatever ranges you want, and change the '90' to that cell value.

As for the second part, I'm not completely following you. Where would the "annual" or "monthly" be determined? If you can attach a sample sheet it would be easier to follow...
