Date Ranges with Gaps - Finding Corresponding Maximum

Hi everyone,

I'm relatively new to Excel and just experienced a small problem I can't really solve.

I have one column A with ascending dates (with gaps in between) and another column B with numbers. Now I have a start date and an end date from some different cells (dates that cannot be found in column A because of the gaps) and want to find the maximum of the corresponding range in column B.

For example, start/end 15.01.-20.04.: maximum should be 7

01.01.2012------11
01.03.2012-------7
25.03.2012-------2
17.04.2012-------6
20.05.2012------11
