Add content of cells together and multiply

My first post!! Greetings from an Excel noob!

I'm beginning to get the drift of some formulas but I'm stumped on this one (two)!

I want to add the content of seven selected cells together, D53 to D59. Then multiply this by three and display the resulting sum in D60.

Using =SUMPRODUCT((D53:D59)*3) as the formula I get (1+1+1+1!+1+1+1)x3=21. If I change any number the result in D60 changes accordingly. My problem is I have a green marker in D60 that tells me "Formula omits adjacent cells". I could ignore this warning but I'd rather know why its telling me this? Is it because D60 takes part in an equation that follows row 60? That equation works out okay as well though!

    While I've got your attention!!

When I enter a number in, say D8. I want Excel to automatically put that number in D57. Now that one, for now, is totally eluding me!!

TIA for any help to a noob. This'll probably be a cake walk for you lot, but I got to start somewhere, that somewhere is at the bottom!!

    Regards Elmer

hi Elmer, welcome to the forum. i wasn't able to replicate the warning, but it's probably not an issue. you could upload a sample file if that concerns you. to upload, press "Go Advanced" beside the "Post Quick Reply" button & click on the paperclip icon

for your 2nd question, maybe this in D57?
    =IF(D8="","",D8)

Thanks, if you have clicked on the * and added our rep.

Well, I feel proper daft now!! If I'd only waited for the tooltip to open I'd have found out that "This cell contains a formula and hasn't been locked etc. etc. etc.!!!"

And that my friend worked a treat, once I'd put the right cell numbers in!!

    Many thanks for your help.
