Example:
In Column A I have the following months,
APR-2013
MAY-2013
JUN-2013
JUL-2013
AUG-2013
SEP-2013
OCT-2013
NOV-2013
DEC-2013
JAN-2014
FEB-2014
MAR-2014
In Column B I need to assign a text value "SUM" (if the month/yr is a Summer month) and/or "WIN" (if the month/yr is a Winter month).
Any help would be appreciated.

Is Column A already in a date format, or are those text entries?
Also, which months are summer vs winter? Do you need Spring/Fall? If you define which months correspond to which seasons, then we can set up a reference table.
With your list in A1:A12
This regular formula begins the list of season assignments
B1: =LOOKUP(MONTH(EOMONTH(A1,1)),{1,4,7,10},{"WIN","SPR","SUM","FALL"})
Copy that formula down through B12.
Is that something you can work with?

Summer Months are Apr13 through Oct13.
Winter Months are Nov13 through Mar14.
I do not need to designate spring/fall.
