Help! Can you assist with: The column adds up a total and also adds the date

Can not figure out. I know it is simple for many but not me.

Here is a simple explanation. I have a sheet that adds up a bunch of cost for products.
What I want is that when the total is complete the sheet will automatically add the date next to any where near the total.

Can someone tell me how to do

    Thanks

Re: Help! Can you assist with: The column adds up a total and also adds the date

as soon as all of the numbers are in the cells and you hit enter
the cells are all totaled in the cell called TOTAL AMOUNT
what I want is when all of the totals are complete

The cell would then have the date that the total was sumbitted/filled in /completed

as you are using a manual calculations this timestamp should work
    http://www.howtoexcelatexcel.com/exc...with-formulas/

you may need to change the <>"" to >0 as the sum may be 0 before the totals are filled in

Re: Help! Can you assist with: The column adds up a total and also adds the date

Thanks for the assistance but not being a very sharp excel person I am a little lost.
Can I put it as simple as this

    Cell
    A B

    1
    2
    3
    4
    5

    total
15 all I want is next to the number to have the date when the last number is filled in

    The formula is

    =Sum( a1+a6) this gives me the 15
Now how do I get the date in the formula to be placed in column b 6 ?

    Thanks for your assistance

Re: Help! Can you assist with: The column adds up a total and also adds the date

    explain exactly the
have the date when the last number is filled in
    and you said
as soon as all of the numbers are in the cells and you hit enter
as each cell is completed the total will start to add up - is that correct?

my solution, may not be perfect - as it will depend how the sheet is completed - I assumed you where using a manual calculation - ie hit F9 to make the sheet do the calculation
    we could set that up
Or if a particular cell will always be the last one we can test that

if in your example A6 is always the last cell to be entered into - and is normally blank
then we can use that as the test

i have to go out right now - but I can make a sample spreadsheet later

    i have attached a spreadsheet
as you enter numbers into cells
A1 to A4 nothing happens - except the total starts to addup
as soon as you enter a number into A5 - you get a time stamp

but if you enter the data into a5 first - you get a timestamp

    see attached

Re: Help! Can you assist with: The column adds up a total and also adds the date

    I truly appreciate your assistance.
I am attaching my spread sheet and you will see it is rather primitive but it serves my purpose.
What I wish for this spread sheet to do is the following:
When all the numbers are placed into all the different cells the total will come up in Cell
    84 I
What I would like for the formula to do is the following. When the total is complete
I would like the total and date in another spot on the sheet
The total and the date would then be sent to cells ………..5 L and 5 M
If this is not possible somehow so that I can keep track of orders and dates for the different time orders are placed…

Again I appreciate your thought and care

    @etaf.

Sorry , got confused here. I thought the workbook had been added by the original poster and this was my offering for what I thought they wanted. It doesn't of course use functions, rather VBA.

I'll wait to see whether the OP clarifies this.

Re: Help! Can you assist with: The column adds up a total and also adds the date

this may not work for you

I have set to manual calculation - so to get any totals to work - you need to use F9 to do the calc
and then it will add the total and also date stamp - see your sheet modified attached

    will that work for you
otherwise it needs a macro of some description - not sure how - as you don't know which totals will be used and the main total will be incrementing

Richard Buttrey see post 10 for example - VBA probably better as do not need the manual calc then
Sorry i missed you had posted my error - sorry
note to self - pay more attention to poster dah!!!!

Richard your excel sheet does exactly what I wish but I do not have the knowledge to figure out how you did it
I can not see the formula that accomplishes the placing of the date the time is not important.

Now all I have to do is get the date stamped into my excel sheet in the cell I would like it into.
Did you read my last post with my attachment?

    Thanks

    You guys are great

    It works perfect!

THis is the formula (I believe) you used =IF(M5>0,IF(L5="",NOW(),L5),"")

If I want to use this for future sheet that I am going to place at the end of the present order form

What do I need to change ( L5)
to for example (L6) for the next order and so on?

    Hi,

It sounds like etaf's function is working OK for you.

The reason you didn't see any formula is because my offering used a VBA macro to achieve the same effect.

    Regards

The reason you didn't see any formula is because my offering used a VBA macro to achieve the same effect.
i haven't looked into the macro,m as i only have starter on this PC - BUT a macro maybe better as you dont need to worry about the calc being carried out - although it was also set to calc on saving -so it will put a date on when saving

THis is the formula (I believe) you used =IF(M5>0,IF(L5="",NOW(),L5),"")

If I want to use this for future sheet that I am going to place at the end of the present order form

What do I need to change ( L5)
to for example (L6) for the next order and so on?
1st you need to goto options and change 2 things under formula
    one - manual calc
two - iteration to stop a circular reference being made

M5 is the cell you are testing for true and if meet the formula executed M5>0 or if you wanted a date stamp if an entry is made than M5<>"" so test to make sure not blank
L5 is where you put the timestamp and because its reference itself you need the option not to warn on circular reference

but this will only work on the manual calc as the total will be incremented everytime an amount is entered

I cant see what condition Richard Buttrey was testing to make the change -

    @ebrany

If it helps at all this is the macro that was included in the workbook I posted.
I gave the name "Total" to the A5 cell which is why you see a reference to this.

Obviously, and as you can no doubt see it's driven by a change in the 'Total' (A5) cell. And the cell immediately to the right of A5, i.e. B5 gets the Date Stamp. (That's the reference to: Range("Total").Cells(1, 2) = Now , where .Cells(1,2) means the same row '1', and the second column ,2 relative to A5.

Re: Help! Can you assist with: The column adds up a total and also adds the date

    Richard Buttrey
looking at the form on post #10 - there's no way to know , or is there, which is the last cell to be populated - rows 1 - 35 columns B to E
and so the grand total will just increment each time the user enters an order quantity and so no cell to test when the form is complete - unless cobrany can tell us

issue will be of the spreadsheet is saved and then they come back and add items
    OR
if they dont do the calc and then use the amount of zero !!! somewhere else - so my solution does have a potential error possibility

I appreciate your assistance and your formula works.
It is just that I am trying to learn how you did it so that I can make adjustments to the rest of the excel sheet

no sorry - also its better via the forum, as you have many eyes that can see and if anyone makes a mistake, it will be picked up by more experienced members - so peer correction goes on
    also
    its against the rules http://www.excelforum.com/forum-rule...rum-rules.html
