    Question Calculate Gestational Age restrospectively

I would like to calcuate gestational age restrospectively in Excel 2010.

    For example...

    Today is March 7, 2013.

I want to calculate the gestational age at birth for a baby that was due (EDD) on February 2, 2013 but was born on January 22, 2013.

    Can anyone help with this.

I think you need to define the terms more clearly - what is "gestational age" exactly? Which columns do you use for the various dates (birth date, expected delivery date)?

    Re: Calculate Gestational Age restrospectively

Column A = Date of Birth
Column B = Estimated Due Date
Column C = Gestational Age calculated in weeks and days (i.e 36 weeks 5 days or 36 6/7)

Is this helpful? I am new at this and have been searching all over the web on how to do this restrospectively.

Thanks for that, but how would you calculate this manually? Would you say that the date of conception is a fixed number of weeks before the EDD (and if so, how many weeks?), so you want the length of time between that (hypothetical) date and the birth date?

This is what I get with that formula
    A B C
    1/23/2013 2/2/2013 5936 2/7

The EDD (Estimated Due Date) is the fixed number. The date of delivery is the variable. I do not have access to Last Menstrual period LMP or date of conception when I am doing this.

I appreciate the help. I currently use an OB wheel or an android app to calulate which is very time consuming for 90 patients per month.

    Re: Calculate Gestational Age restrospectively

I'm a firm believer that we need to understand the math behind a problem before we can program it into Excel. Everything I know about this comes from the births of my own children, so you may need too confirm the details.

1st thing I would mention is that, if we are going to use Excel's built in date serials (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ma...599.aspx?CTT=1), we will want all the math expressed in terms of days, since Excel's date serials are all expressed in terms of "days."

As I recall, calculating EDD is fairly simple. They would take LMP and add 40 weeks (280 days? or is the 257 that Ace_XL put into his formula more correct? or a different value?). Given EDD, we should be able to calculate LMP pretty easily. (LMP=EDD-280)

My impression from those pregnancies was that gestational age was simply days/weeks since LMP (so conception was typically somewhere around day 14/week 2). So, gestational age (in days) should be easy to calculate from LMP [GA=DOB-LMP=DOB-(EDD-280)].

As I said, I'm no expert in obstetrics/gynecology, so you will want to verify the math with someone who can verify that these formulas would be correct.

    Hi,

What if I have to calculate the gestational age on the basis of the date of data collection(11.nov.2014-11.11.2014) which is in column B and the last menstrual period is (05.07.2014) which is in column J. I do not seem to get the correct date.

@poonamr: This forum can be very strict about rules like not posting your question in another user's thread. This forum would prefer that you start your own thread, linking to this thread if you feel that it will help you explain your question.

That said, as I noted to the OP, I think we need to understand the math to understand how to get the correct answer. The algebra should be basically the same, GA=Date-LMB=11 Nov 2014 - 7 may 2014=188 days. When you start your thread, show the answer you are getting, the answer you expect, and explain how you arrived at the answer you expect.
