Conditional formatting to color text cell that represent data cells

For my intro to computing class I have been instructed to create a spreadsheet putting 13 states in column A, then the next four columns I put relevant data. My teacher wants me to create a formula that will highlight each state one of two colors if the total row correspondent to the state (i.e. B2, C2, D2, F3 correspondent to the state in A2) added up are greater or less than the average of all the data combined. I know how to do conditional formatting for two cells that contain data but creating a formula where a text cell is dependent on if another data cell is greater or less than another data cell is over my head. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks! And if you need any clarification please let me know.

Well, I don't really want to do your homework, but from what I read, it looks like 2 CF formulas, and maybe using COUNTIF/S or SUMIF/S with a > or < comparision to create a 'true' or 'false' for the conditional formatting..

Hope that at least gives you a starting point
