    Indirect function not working with spaces

    I'm using the formula 
    =MAX(INDIRECT(A1&"!c:c"))
    to give the sum of collumn C of the sheet specified in collum A (of this sheet).
    Works like a charm except when the name of the sheet has a space or - in it. It just gives the REF error.
    I have tried sticking brackets in but it's no use.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
