Excel cant create a formula for the function

I have a list of dates and corresponding there is a Closed and open written to it , i want to the no of closed entries in a single cell with dates which are less than todays dates. Can you please assist me with it
Civil main contract Closed Planned 20-Sep-12
Waterproofing substructure Open Planned 5-Dec-12
Waterproofing superstructure Open Planned 16-Jan-14
Excavation Closed Planned 20-Dec-12

For the specific table it will only take the value of the top two rows as 16 jan is after todays date and then answer CLOSED -->2
OPEN--->1

its alrite if the closed and open are in different cells but the whole formula to be in one cell
