How to Vlookup but with columns going to the left

Is there a way to do a vlookup where you are looking for information in column D and want to return information in column A? I alwats have to copy and paste my information when doing this and thought there might be an easier way.

    Thanks

Re: How to Vlookup but with columns going to the left

hi katieshields. usually, people use INDEX & MATCH for such cases. if the lookup_value is in say E2 & your data is from A2:D10, then:
    =INDEX($A$2:$A$10,MATCH(E2,$D$2:$D$10,0))

there's an interesting way of doing the VLOOKUP backwards though, although unnecessary since we can use INDEX & MATCH.
    =VLOOKUP(E2,CHOOSE({1,2},$D$2:$D$10,$A$2:$A$10),2,0)

i covered the 2nd one with explanation inside this thread, sheet number 46:

Thank you for both of your responses. Index and Match is a new one to me as I have never heard of this. I have tried to understand the formulas but I am struggling a little. I need to make reference to a seperate sheet. I have uploaded a very basic example. I need the information on one of the sheets showing on another. I hope this makes sense
