Lookup value in a column and return the most common value which follows...

    Hi guys,

I am new to the forum and consider myself average when it comes to Excel formulas but I am not sure if this should fall under a specific formula or a macro (haven't worked much with macros). So I apologize ahead of time if these needs to be directed elsewhere. I DJ on the side and my software exports a text file of all the songs played each time it is opened and closed- a log essentially. My goal is to convert that text file to an excel into a single column sheet with all the songs listed of each gig. There will be duplicates of course due to multiple plays but the sequential order is essential. My goal here is to be able to look up a song and have the most common value which follows that particular song returned to provide a recommendation as to what song I have played most commonly after the current. Do any of you have recommendations to how I could approach this- if even a formula would work at all?

    Thanks for your help!

Well we could do with an example file to see how the data layout is out really to help you.
If you have the data as two columns though for example, the first is the song played, the second is the song played after, you can then count the number of occurences of A&B and then use this to find the most common song played after a song of choice.

The attached example is basic but shows a way this could be possible. If you can provide an example file (remove any sensitve data) then I/someone else can assist you with your needs.
