retrieving a list based on an option from another list

Hello! I am working on a final project for my AgTech Management class, and I am having troubles. I need to be able to retrieve a list when a certain option is selected. I have two drop down lists that work something like this: (example) I have a drop-down list of school years. If you pick year "11", all the 11th grade teachers appear as options in a second drop down list. When one teacher is selected, I want the classlist to show up as a column, NOT as a second drop down list. I have stumped my professor and my high school teachers. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

    Hi there,

To get the double dropdown list, take a look at this article: http://www.contextures.com/xlDataVal02.html

Once you have that set up, you can use a lookup table to pull the pupils names with a VLOOKUP or HLOOKUP (dependent on how you set up your table). I've mocked something up for you take a look at. Hopefully it all makes sense. I've only set up the first couple of years, but just extend the list and the formula references to include later years. Oh, and sorry my pupil names aren't very creative

you are an absolute genius! that is exactly what I'm trying to do! I have the double drop lists, I'm just working on my "pupil lists". If I can't get it to work out, I will post an attachment of my spreadsheet. would you be willing to help me figure out a formula specific to my book? Thanks so much

Hope my attachment went through...I'm doing an animal management sheet and all my animal numbers on the "LISTS" page will be microchip numbers. I felt that it was easier to use the teacher example since it's something everyone is familiar with, but this is my specific project

    Hi there,

See attached - I've put in the HLOOKUP formula to pull the animal codes, and extended your lookup table to include all animals.

    Cheers!
