Conditional formatting on rows colour dependant on what is typed in column 1

Hi

I would like to be able to format a row to a particular colour depending on what is typed into cell in Column "A"
so if
"NQA" was typed in then row would format background colour to purple fill
"NSH" was typed in then row would format background colour to light blue fill
"NEV" was typed in then row would format background colour to green fill

Thanks Dharkraven

1. First is select he entire row A1 to H1
2. Go to conditional formatting, formula
3. type the forumula -> $A1="NQA" ->put the fill color you want.NOTE: no dolar sign between--> $A1
4. do the same with the remaining options for NSH and NEV just not that there is no dollar sign between $A1 ="NQA" in the formula.
5. after you are done with entering the formula for conditional formatting while the rows A1 to H1 is selected go to Format painter located at the Home tab.
6. using the format painter click entire row from A2 up to the last row H100 you want to have condition.

Hi

I have tried this and can't get it to work.
Your comment about no $ sign is confusing? If you have put a dollar ($) sign as part of the formula then is it part of the formula or is it not added as part of the formula?

I can get the conditional formatting working if I am just doing the first column, however if I chose "NQA" as the selection (from the first column) then tab into the next cell and as I type info, I would like the rest of the cells along that row to have the background shade to the same colour.

Thanks

Debs

maybe this will help explain absoluting $...
$ is used to absolute a cell reference, locking it so that when copied, it doesnt change.. it comes in 3 different "flavors...

$A$1 absolutes the entire cell reference, it will not chance when copied down or across
$A1 absolutes only the column, "A" will not change when copied across, but "1" WILL change when copied down
A$1 absolutes only the row, "1" will not change when copied down, but "A" will change when copied across
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
