Using results of a VLookup formula in Data Validation to generate a list

In my worksheet, I have over 50 named ranges based on the state selected in one of the cells. I have used a VLookup formula to return the correct range to be used based on the state selected. Now I want to use Data Validation to create a drop-down list using the named range determined by my VLookup formula. To simplify this, I'll say that the State is entered in cell A1, the result of the VLookup is in cell A2, and I want to put the drop-down list in cell A3. When I open Data Validation and enter =A2 in the Source, instead of recognizing the value in the cell as the name of a range that it should use, it treats it like text and just returns the name of the range. How can I make it provide the actual data in the range (as a list) instead of just providing the name of the range?
