How to account for head to head matchup in Excel with other tie breakers

    Hello Community,

I have been put in charge (someone volunteered me) of a baseball tournament. I created the attached excel spreadsheet to track wins, losses, ties and official tiebreaker rules. However, I am unable to figure out the second tie break rule (head to head) and how to apply it properly without affecting other areas.

Here are the rules I followed below. Basically it only applies the next rule if there is still a tie after the previous. Rule 5, head to head, is supposed to be the second rule, but since I couldn't figure it out I had to move it to 5 and what would have been manual. Head to head would only apply when those two teams played each other and have the same win percentage.

    Official Tie Breaker Rules
*Each only applied if tied before
1 Overall Won - Loss record
    2 Runs Allowed
    3 Run Differential
    4 Total Runs Scored
5/2 Head to Head - supposed to be second tie breaker
    6 Coin Flip

I have attached the file with the various tabs I used. If you look at the Silver ranking, this is where all the data is crunched. The Silver Games scores is actual data and I collected everything on Overall data.

As a side question, is there a better and easier way that is more intuitive for the over all data? It is busy for sure. I also couldnt get it to do the Tie right. I have to manually input the tie. Any tips for making easier or cleaning would be appreciative.

The priority is how to make head to head my second tie breaker.

Was hoping for any suggestions. I realize this is probably a lot more complicated then some.

Re: How to account for head to head matchup in Excel with other tie breakers

I have learned a lot more since I originally posted and I was able to come up with a rudimentary way to explore head to head. Now my issue is that when I apply the formula I either get a circular argument or I have to sort before it works.

Attached you will find the two options I am experimenting with. Right now it is literally only when 2 teams are tied. If there are more, the formula would need to be more complicated. At some point I would like to have it look at more then 2, but for right now this will work. I am pretty proud I even learned enough to come up with this.

For option one: IS there a way to make add the data from the head to head analysis and not be circular?

For option two: What would you recommend is the best way to put the data into K. Maybe even eliminate the sort need.

Lastly if someone wanted to help with a more complicated formula to look at ties between 3 or more teams, would be happy to explain what rules I am wanting to follow based on a published paper I read. Essentially you only apply H-H rules of more then 2 teams when all the tied teams have played each other. If they all have not played each other, resort to next tie breaker. With 1 exception. A beats B and B beats C then ABC. But even this one you can not truly say A is better then C since A and C never played each other. Excellent paper on reasonings and scenarios if people are interested I will link.
