Obtaining averages from ranges in one column dependent upon values in another column

Hi.

What we are trying to do is obtain the averages for certain cells in one column, depending on data in another column.

For example (illustrated in the picture), we want to obtain the averages of data in column 2 for position 1, position 2, position 3 (column 1). We can do this manually by averaging the values, but because there are more than three positions, and because the number of rows vary between files, we are looking to create one set of formulas that we can use across multiple files.
