    Index Match NOT Working

So i have strings of concatenated text. I get one value from a worksheet and have it in column A, then I need to look it up and return a value from column B. But when I do the index match it still picks a near match, not the exact match even though i have the Zero in the formula. Can someone please please help!!

    Maybe

    =LOOKUP(A10,$A$2:$A$3,$B$2:$B$3)

    Re: Index Match NOT Working

It's the * in the strings.
That is a special character, used as a wildcard.

So once it encounters a * in the string, it's reading this
    KITCHEN & BATH*TOILET/TOILET SEAT*TOILET SEAT*NOT ASSIGNED
    like
    KITCHEN & BATHandanyothertextafterwards..

Recommend doing a mass find/replace to change * to some other character like ^ for example.

In the find dialogue, you'll have to use ~* to make it look for the literal * symbol.

    Re: Index Match NOT Working

The asterisks in your lookup value are being interpreted as wildcards, you can use SUBSTITUTE to replace * with ~* where the ~ tells excel to treat the * as a literal asterisk, i.e.

    =INDEX($B$2:$B$3,MATCH(SUBSTITUTE(A10,"*","~*"),$A$2:$A$3,0))

or you can use VLOOKUP like

    =VLOOKUP(SUBSTITUTE(A10,"*","~*"),$A$2:$B$3,2,0)

    Re: Index Match NOT Working

The asterisk in the MATCH function is a wildcard.

    =INDEX($B$2:$B$3,MATCH(SUBSTITUTE(A10,"*","~*"),A2:A3,0))
