Testing for blank values from a function

    Hey folks,

If I enter in cell A1, If(criteria,"",""), as I understand it, should return a blank value. If I then test that cell for a blank value using Isblank(A1), I am for some reason receiving a "false" output.

It is as if Isblank() cannot detect that cells which If() has left blank are blank. Isblank() appears to be confused by the presence of a formula in the cell, leading it to return a conclusion that the cell is not blank.

Anyone know a way to work around this?

    Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to the forum

A cell that has "" in it (say, from another formula) is not blank, so ISBLANK() is not confused, it is returning what it should. A blank cell is 1 that has nothing in it. to test for "", you need to use =if(cell="",............

Thank you. Do you also have something to test for the presence of anything in a cell, other than Isblank?

For example, I was under the impression that If(a1="*"... would test for the presence of anything, but apparently it simply tests for the presence of an asterisk, hah.

The IF function doesn't support the use of wildcards.

Also, the wildcard * doesn't work on numbers. It works on TEXT only. So, technically, * doesn't mean "anything".
