Vlookup in a database with variable filename?

    Hi all,

I have a bit of a challenge on my hands. I am creating a "tool", which extracts and formats various bits of information from a couple of databases. This will enable users to quickly find and copy all the info they need.

The problem I'm having is one of the databases is updated every hour, automatically, and every update is given a different file name (including date and time). Is it possible to create a formula to vlookup in whatever the latest file is?

I am currently stuck at copying the whole new database into a new sheet in my workbook periodically, but this is liable to create issues if it isn't done often enough.

    Thanks in advance.

    How about this? http://www.excelforum.com/excel-form...n-vlookup.html

Also why not just rewriting existing file name with new data every hour instead of crating new file name ? Unless you need back up of old information ?

Re: Vlookup in a database with variable filename?

Thanks, I saw that thread but my issue is slightly different, I do not know the filename I am looking into (as it isn't always updated at the same time).

Unfortunately I cannot get the file overwritten, as it is auto generated and kept for backup...
