Using excel to pick a value from a drop down list and have resulting data be shown

hello all, this is my first post here and the reason that I joined the forum...

so I'm trying to create a spreadsheet for pick'ems for the NFL. I'm trying to have injury reports update and then be displayed in a helpful format. I've been able to have a link from a website put into the spreadsheet so that it updates every time I open the workbook. the problem is I'm not sure how to have the spreadsheet look up the data and display it because the information is shown in columns (column one has the team name and players, column two has the position, and column three has the days of the week that the player practices) and the amount of players changes every week. My goal is to use a drop down menu in column A of the spreadsheet, then have the information the spreadsheet searches for displayed in the columns to the right.

so basically what i want it to be able to pick a team from a drop down list and have all the players and the days they practiced displayed for that team and I'm not sure how to do this due to the constant changing of the amount of cells used per team per week.

if you need any more information please ask... I'm desperate for some help on this problem...

    Thank you!

Re: Trying to find the right formula...

You can use Advanced data filter for this scenario. In that you will have option to create few drop down and you can populate all the information based on the criteria selected in drop downs in the same sheet as well as in other sheet. It's matter of your choice. If you can manage it, do it yourself but if you have difficulty in doing that, please upload a sample workbook with same design and data (don't put the confidential data on sheet if any) as in your original sheet. So organize your workbook as you want and upload here to get the support from forum members.

    Hope it helps.

Re: Trying to find the right formula...

thank you sktneer for the response and i see what you are saying and how it would work but the problem is the website that i get the information from displays the team name and the players in the same column... and if i change this i feel that it would disturb the spreadsheet somehow upon updating.

i have attached basically what i am working with...

    thank you again!

It would be better that if you upload the workbook with two sheets "Before" and "After". In the Before sheet you will have the imported raw data and in the After sheet you will have the extracted information from the Before sheet in a way you want. The picture would be more clear then and helpful for us to know your requirement. Moreover what about no. of teams? Are they same everyday or they may vary next time?

Re: Using excel to pick a value from a drop down list and have resulting data be shown

Advanced data filter will not work in this scenario. May be you need a vba code to get this even not sure about it. Because the data is complex and and changes too after the sheet is refreshed.
Sorry that can't help your regarding this.
