vlookup not woeking for me for this answer

OK, let me please try to explain using a spread sheet
I'm trying to keep records on how the tip sheet picks finished in a Greyhound race.
The vlookup formula is not matching how the picks finished.
The picks were 4-1-3-2-8-5-6-7. The race results were 1-4-7-8-5-2-6-3.
I was told if I use the =vlookup formula it would keep in line how the picks finished. But that did not happen. What did I do wrong or was the =vlookup not the right formula.
The 1 won the race and was 2nd pick but looking at E8 on the sample below its not showing that. column E8 thru E15 is the =vlookup formulas but it not lining up the right way the race finished.
I put in column J8 thru J15 how it was suppose to look. How can this be fixed. The word post in columns C7 and K7 are just Tracks words, but really that's just the order the picks were picked to finish.
I hope some one can help and I hope I have not confused every one. This excel stuff is fun, but tricky and more times than not at least for me hard to figure out.

I see 2 tables, is the 1st what tou have and the 2nd what you want? Which column is the criteria and whcih column do you want returned?

Re: vlookup not woeking for me for this answer

Thanks for answering. the columns A thru E shows the results I got when I used the =vlookup formula. If you look at column E8 thru E15 you will see where I had the formula if they showed when I uploaded this file. I hope I did the formula right. If they did not show up this is the formula I used. =VLOOKUP(1,$A8:$D15,2,FALSE()) starting with 1 and working down to 8.
But to answer your question columns H thru K was how it was suppose to turn out, with column J8 thru J15 having and showing the right answers. I typed in that column what I was hoping the vlookup was going to show, but if you look at E8 thru E15 you see that did not happen. Is there a way to get the answer I'm looking for?
Column J is the way I want it. If you use something other than vlookup, please show me how you got your answer. thanks for your help
