Wildcard for a number in a VLOOKUP formula

I am trying to create a VLOOKUP formula that searches for a string of numbers from one sheet in another sheet, but the other sheet contains other numbers around this number. I know you can use the asterisk as a wildcard, but from what I was reading most people use it when looking up text, I am trying to look up numbers. Is there any wildcard that I can use to look up numbers or any formula I can use?
