    COUNTA within an IF function

How do I ... count all the non-blank cells with text in it (COUNTA) but only if there is an R in a cell's range (IF)?

Then I'd like to minus one from that result (eg. 5-1 = 4)

I'd like the cell to show nothing (a blank cell or a 0) if there is not an R in that cell range

One solution, requiring you to add a column:

With your range in column A, add the following formula in column B
    Formula: copy to clipboard

    Then SUM column B - 1.
