# Formula that points to another cell with a formula to finish first one

1. ## Formula that points to another cell with a formula to finish first one

The title line of this post probably doesn't make much sense. I couldn't figure out how to explain what I need in that short space. I'm wondering if it's possible to write a formala that if a certain condition is met, performs a formula referenced in another cell. For example:
Column A contains a list of formulas. In column B is the condition, let's use Work Type as an example. The result (or the formula I need) would be in column C.
So if the work type is "Type1", then the formula in the corresponding column C cell would perform the formula in cell A5.
If the work type is "Type8", then the formula in the corresponding column C cell would perform the formula in cell A2.

Is this possible to do without VBA? Register To Reply

Hi NS4Excel, try look into INDIRECT function.

Can you please explain a bit more. Just looking at the INDIRECT function doesn't really help me. Sorry. Thanks for any additional help you can provide. Register To Reply

Any chance you could provide some sample data and a few sample answers? Register To Reply

Hi NS4Excel, have a look at http://www.cpearson.com/excel/indirect.htm.
Or, please provide more sample spreadsheet with expected data and some description as suggested by Ford.

Attached is a sample workbook. If possible, I'd like to have a list of formulas somewhere that other formulas can point to. Similar to how I do my data validation - I have a separate sheet that has all the lists that the validations will use. This way instead of changing each validation list within the cells themselves, I just go to my List worksheet and update any of the lists. Can this be done for formulas as well?

If not, then I'd still like a simpler solution to multiple nested IF statements. Thanks. Register To Reply

There could be a good number of different doc types. Instead of entering numerous IF formulas I'd like to write one that says, if the doc type is "AA T&M" then do Formula 1, if doc type is "AB T&M" then do Formula 2, etc.
Tell us what the formulas would be.

Sounds like you want to do some sort of lookup. You'd create a 2 column table. The doc types would be in the left column and the corresponding formula result would be in the right column.

See if this helps:
