trying to use greater than in sumif based upon a cell using edate

I'm sure this is a simple problem but it has baffled me. I have a cell in A1 using NOW(). I have a cell in J1 using =EDATE(A1,-3) to get 3 months prior to today's date. I then have a sumifs statement totalling all the sales of a particular customer and I'm trying to get it to use the condition of >J1 to add up all transaction in the last 3 months but it fails to work. If I hard code the date into the condition the formula works fine so the problem must be in how it is interpretting the value of the EDATE function but I have failed to find (or lack the proper syntax) to find the answer through google. Please help.
