    time formatting for excel cells

I recently posted a similar thread but it wasn't clear.

Whenever I use the custom format and choose a cell to show "[h]:mm" it always shows "dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss" and I have no idea why.

I simply want the cell to show 01:30 when I enter 1.3 into the cell but it keeps adding a date or reading it as 1 day (displaying 24:00) and it's becoming rather frustrating.

Sorry if I'm being unclear. I have attached a file to try and explain what I mean.

    Thanks for your help

Your worksheet is operating normally. 1 represents 1 day. Decimal fractions represent the hours. If you type in .5 12:00 will show up. You can't enter 1.3 and get an hour and a half. It is just the "nature of the beast".

Oh I see! Well thanks for clearing that up for me

It seems a bit daft that you can't simply type in 1.3 to get an hour and a half. I hope this is something that gets changed in the newer version.

Why when I select the custom option of just hh:mm:ss does it keep displaying dd/mm/yyyy in front of it? Is this just something that cannot be changed again?

I think that you are referring to what appears in the formula bar as opposed to what shows in the active cell. The formula bar will show you what is actually there and the cell will show you what the result of the formatting is.

Regardless of the formatting applied, the underlying serial number of the date and time is still present. The formatting just shows you that value in the manner that you have chosen. The formula bar presentation is affected in a different way from that chosen for the active cell. A lot depends upon what exactly you have entered into the cell.
