I am working in a table where I would like the whole row to highlight based on the value in one of the cells. These rows of data will be updated regularly, so the formatting has to change with the data. Is this possible?

Hi,
Yes just set the conditional format for the cell in question (using a relative reference) and then when it comes to applying the CF choose the whole of the range of rows and columns you want to change whenever the cell in the same column as the original cell changes for any particular row.

Thank you, Richard. The problem is that the reference is actually text, not a number. The cell will have a Y or and N in it, and I need it to highlight the row only if there is an N in it. I can't figure out how to write the syntax for the formula to do that. Thoughts?
Assuming your range is A2:A10
then use formula:
=$A2:$A$10="N"
and Apply to:
=$A$2:$A$10

Maybe I'm not understanding you completely. If I go under "Conditional Formatting", "Highlight Cell Rules", "Equal To", would the above syntax work? I can't seem to make that happen.
Would I go under "New Formatting Rule", "Use a formula to determine which cells to format"? I think I'm just missing something fundamental. :/
You have to go CF, New Rule and choose Use a formula to determine which cells to format, enter formula there and apply desired format.
That didn't work. I'm not sure why.
I need the row to highlight, based on a value in column J. My table range is. A8:J35. The "N" value would be entered into column J. I can get the cell in J to highlight, based on the value (that's straight forward), but I need the whole row to highlight.
then you formula is:
=$J8:$J$35="N"
and Apply to:
=$A$8:$J$35

That still didn't work. Here is a sample with the unneeded data removed.
Thoughts?
Thank you so much! That solved it. I didn't realized that there was a different format under Manage Rules that allowed you to do that. Now I know.
I think there is no difference between these 2 formulas.
=$J8="N"
=$J8:$J$35="N"

Thank you! That also works, and will continue to do so as data is added.
