Table automatically extends horizontally but not vertically?

For what reason would a table not extend vertically on it's own when an entry is made in the next row directly beneath it? On all of my sheets I could swear the table will automatically extend vertically, but on one workbook that has 10 duplicated and then modified sheets with tables (I mention that for it might have been something from the original that was copied that is the problem), the table easily expands horizontally when a value is placed in a column next in line, but not the same for the next row!

    Hi Bruce,

In newer versions of Excel the concept of a Table has improved/changed. If rows (and columns) of data are defined at a TABLE then stuff happens differently.

What I think you are really looking for is a DNR (Dynamic Named Range) of data that will grow depending on the number of rows or columns that are added to it. See:

    http://www.ozgrid.com/Excel/DynamicRanges.htm or
    http://www.vertex42.com/ExcelArticle...ed-ranges.html

or new stuff in 2010 Tables at

One test is worth a thousand opinions.

I am running 2010 and these are tables which I created in this version so the mystery still exists, but I thank you for I never knew of the dynamic aspect of ranges! I keep learning...

If you INSERT a row (or column) does Excel know the new row (column) is part of the table?

If you add the new data to the bottom row do the formulas continue down? What happens for columns?

I'm not sure I understood your question completely.

Re: Table automatically extends horizontally but not vertically?

If I place data in a cell to the immediate right of the table, a new table column "appears on it's own". I believe this is supposed to be the same behavior if I place data in the very next row below the table, but instead I have to adjust the size of the table to include the new row.

Frankly, I even doubt myself at this point and am about to open up a new table in a new worksheet just to verify I am not imagining something that isn't correct!

Edit: Nope, not nuts. It should expand automatically right and down...

We need the version of Excel you are using. It makes a big difference on how to attack this answer. Update your member profile and put in the Excel version.

    Look at:
    http://www.excelforum.com/excel-gene...expanding.html
where there is an OPTION for auto expanding in 2007

    Verified ON.

Going to try to "sterilize" the information and then post for examination a little later today time permitting; thank-you for your help!

EDIT: I have noticed one strange behavior that might provide a clue, perhaps even related to a possible conflict with something like the autorange you have enlightened me on: The table occupies columns A through G. The columns for manual entry are A and B, but primarily B (Column A is for exceptions and deviations). When I enter a name in column B, columns C, D and E properly auto populate with the formulas extending down automatically, yet no other column extend information down nor does the table itself extend down - both the visual formatting style and the little whateverthatis marker in the lower right corner of the last lowest right cell do not drop down a row. Interesting?

EDIT 02: It is almost certain that I, prior to creating the table, created a range with the formulas in the first 20 rows. I am guessing that because that is present it is keeping Excel from automatically extending the table, about to test theory.

EDIT 03: VERIFIED. Geez that was stupid. Without your help I would NEVER have stumbled on that though, I thank you!!!
